THE CATCH SCIENCE

The sauna-longevity viral stat comes from a real, well-known Finnish cohort study (Laukkanen T, Khan H, Zaccardi F, Laukkanen JA. "Association Between Sauna Bathing and Fatal Cardiovascular and All-Cause Mortality Events," JAMA Internal Medicine 2015;175(4):542-548; DOI 10.1001/jamainternmed.2014.8187). Researchers followed 2,315 middle-aged men (42–60) from Eastern Finland for a median 20.7 years, recording sauna frequency (1×, 2–3×, 4–7× per week) and session duration. Versus once-a-week users, men who sauna'd 4–7 times a week had 63% lower sudden cardiac death (adjusted HR 0.37, 95% CI 0.18–0.75), about half the fatal CVD (HR ~0.50), and 40% lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.60). Session length also tracked risk: sessions over 19 minutes were linked to about half the sudden-death risk of sessions under 11 minutes (HR 0.48). The catch: this is observational, so association isn't causation — letters in the same journal ("The Link Between Sauna Bathing and Mortality May Be Noncausal," JAMA Intern Med 2015;175(10):1718-1719) argue frequent sauna use may simply mark a healthier, more leisure-rich lifestyle, or self-selection of men who tolerate heat well. The cohort is men only, one country, baseline 1984–1989. And heat stress isn't safe with unstable cardiac disease, severe aortic stenosis, pregnancy or alcohol use — check with your doctor before making it a habit.
