Going to bed right after dinner? What the research says

- EAT EARLIER, WALK AFTER
Your gut runs a cleaning wave of contractions, the migrating motor complex, only while you are fasting; eating stops it. In a small case-control study from China (166 patients, 166 controls), people who went to bed 2 to 3 hours after dinner had about 2.5 times the odds of colorectal cancer compared with those who waited 4 hours or more, and people who walked after dinner had lower odds. This is an association from self-reported habits, not proof of cause, and a 2025 systematic review describes the evidence on meal timing as suggestive rather than settled.
