FIBER AND PATIENCE

The lining of your intestine is one of the fastest renewing tissues in the body: stem cells keep dividing and replacing old cells every few days. Gut bacteria ferment fiber into butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid that helps strengthen the gut barrier. In a study of 52 healthy adults, using a footstool at the toilet was linked to less straining and more complete emptying. Fast cell turnover is routine maintenance, not a five-day cure for gut problems.
